Course Description
This course is designed to introduce civil engineering students to the fundamental concepts of probability and statistics and their application to real-world problems. The course will cover topics such as descriptive statistics, probability theory, probability distributions, sampling techniques, some important sampling distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, regression analysis, and risk analysis. The course will include hands-on exercises and projects using real-world civil engineering data, as well as case studies and examples from the field. By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of probability and statistics and how to apply them to solve problems in civil engineering.
Course objectives
The objective of this course is to provide civil engineering students with a comprehensive understanding of probability and statistics and their application to real-world problems. By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand the basic concepts of probability theory and statistical analysis
- Apply probability models to civil engineering problems, particularly in reliability analysis and design
- Use statistical inference techniques to make decisions and draw conclusions from data
- Apply risk analysis techniques to identify, quantify, and mitigate potential hazards and uncertainties in civil engineering projects
- Develop effective communication skills in presenting and discussing statistical results and findings
- Students will gain practical experience in applying probability and statistics to solve real-world civil engineering problems through hands-on exercises, projects, and case studies.
The course will also prepare students for future work in the field by providing them with the necessary skills and knowledge to analyze and model data, make informed decisions, and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
